The Gas City-Mill Township Library Board of Trustees is searching for their next Library Director. The ideal candidate will work to partner with our experienced library staff to administer the day-to-day functions of the library.

This is a full-time position - 40 hour/week exempt position with a benefit package that includes, PTO; Paid Holidays; PERF; Health; Dental; Vision; Life Insurance



Library Director for the Gas City-Mill Township Public Library


Position Description: The Library Director leads, directs and manages the daily operations and budget of the library and works under the direction of the Board of Trustees to provide financial and operational structures for the library. Work is performed under the direction of the Library Board of Trustees.  

Primary Objectives:
Direct the daily operations of the library
Create policies for library operations
Create and monitor the library budget
​Ensure high quality library service  


Specific Responsibilities of the Job:
Provide operational direction for the library
Define library priorities and goals
Create and communicate a strategic plan
Coach and manage employee behaviors
Recommend policies and services to be established by the Board of Trustees
Settle patron disputes regarding library accounts
Communicate regularly with staff
Provide mandates for service improvements
Communicate and contract with vendors and service providers
Make hiring and pay decisions to be approved by the Board
Determine appropriate disciplinary actions
Make termination decisions Conduct performance evaluations
Attend community meetings and sit on community Boards
Complete special projects as needed or assigned by the Board of Trustees
Communicate regularly with the Board of Trustees
Catalog library materials


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to manage daily operations of a public facility including maintenance
Ability to interpret local, state, and federal regulations and apply them to policies and operations
Ability to lead an effective meeting
Knowledge of personal computers and related hardware, electronic mail, the Internet, office software, document imaging, etc.
Ability to excel as a productive and positive team member
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, patrons, and the public Ability to contribute to a positive work culture that fosters excellent customer service and teamwork

Education and Experience:
Degree or equivalent experience: Master’s Degree in Library Science highly preferred
Years of experience: At least 5 years of library experience, including at least 2 years of administration preferred
Specialized training in: Library Science, Management, Personnel Management  
Certification: Must hold or be eligible to hold Indiana State Library Certification LC4 or higher

Extended periods of sitting and using computers are common.
Extended periods of standing may be required.
Occasional extended periods of walking may be required.

The employee may occasionally be exposed to chemicals used in common cleaning products.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate but may occasionally be loud when around machines.
In general the majority of the work day will be in an office environment.
